Zohran Mamdani affirms his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.
A Historic Residence
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his triumph in November.
"The choice was based on the security of my family and the importance of dedicating my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in his announcement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its vibrant immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, Astoria will continue to reside inside me and my work," he said.
Political Debate
In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing although he came from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a place for public city functions, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his previous Astoria digs.
Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's original era.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
Records showed Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
