Why Real Madrid Have 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

Whenever a 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time European champions claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against Benfica that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."

Given a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with great endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He played over an hour in the 2-1 win at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the club pursue trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
