Trump Invites Loved Ones of Injured National Guard Members to the White House
Former President Trump stated on the weekend that he has asked the relatives of a National Guard member killed last week to come to the executive mansion.
He added that he contacted her family and they were “heartbroken”.
Background on the Devastating Incident
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was fatally shot in a shooting on Wednesday in the nation's capital.
Her colleague, US air force staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, continues receiving treatment in critical condition.
Memorials across West Virginia have taken place in their memory.
Presidential Offer
The president stated he’s discussed a visit to the White House for the parents of both members of the West Virginia Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a hard experience, come to the White House. We’re going to recognize Sarah,” Trump informed the press. “And likewise with him, recover or not.”
Public Support
Mourners gathered over the past few days at a local school in the state to remember Beckstrom.
Both she and Wolfe had been working with the state guard as part of Trump’s national effort to support public safety in the capital.
Remembering the Soldier
“Sarah was the kind of student that educators wished for. She behaved with inner fortitude, a warm expression and a optimistic attitude that encouraged those around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the leader of Beckstrom’s previous school, told the Associated Press. “She was kind, considerate and always ready to assist people.”
Memorial plans for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Legal Actions and Policy Revisions
Officials have indicted a twenty-nine-year-old Afghan national with one count of first-degree murder and charges of violent assault while armed.
The tragedy prompted the government to pause refugee claims and temporarily stop issuing visas to possessors of Afghan passports.
Status of the Airman
The airman, a native of the city, began his service in 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman high school, as reported by the news agency.
He is still undergoing care and is “battling to survive”, West Virginia leader Patrick Morrisey stated on television.
Attorney general Pam Bondi informed Fox News Sunday that she also intended to visit his relatives.
Impact of the Fallen Soldier
Beckstrom, from Summersville, completed her education from Webster County High in June 2023 and began her service not long after, serving as a MP with excellence, per the West Virginia National Guard.
“She had a lot of kindness and she certainly had bravery,” the governor told the gathering at the vigil. “Though her life was cut short, she has created a legacy that’s going to endure.”
