The English Team to Begin Euro 2028 Journey at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will embark on their Euro 2028 journey at the Manchester City’s stadium, assuming they attain the anticipated entry for a tournament hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an England men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is expected to stage the national team for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.
The team are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at the national stadium, but, should they win their group, their round of 16 match would occur at St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
Competition Launch and Demonstration
The event was inaugurated at an event in central London on the previous evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the organizing bodies were barracked as they approached the location by about 50 pro-Palestine demonstrators, who urged the Israeli team to be removed from global football because of the Gaza crisis.
Signs were raised with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Fixture List
The first match of the tournament will be staged at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will include Wales if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the championship match, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5pm.
It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to households and help reach a wider spectrum of audiences.
Participating Countries
The Irish team are scheduled to play their opening match at the Dublin stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.
All four host countries’ teams will take part in the qualifying tournament; two automatic spots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the finals through the qualification path.
Locations and Elimination Phase
The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium round out the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarterfinal matches staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be held in Belfast, which was removed as a venue city last year when it was revealed the Belfast stadium could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
Tournament Vision
“This will be a championship for the fans and a showcase of everything we love about the sport – its passion and capacity to foster unity.”
In excess of three million tickets, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are expected to be made available to attendees.
