American Social Media Personality Penalized After Large-Scale Electric Bike Ride on Sydney Harbour Bridge
NSW police have levied a penalty against an US-based online influencer and served two traffic infringement notices for alleged reckless operation following a swarm of e-bike riders converged on the Sydney Harbour Bridge during the busy commute on a weekday.
The Incident: An Illegal Gathering
A gathering of around 40 individuals riding electric bikes and motorbikes proceeded along the bridge’s main deck, where cycling is prohibited. The riders subsequently reversed direction and traveled through the city’s CBD and Haymarket.
"There was a risk of serious injury or fatalities," stated NSW police assistant commissioner the officer on the following day.
Law enforcement indicated they did not immediately pursue the riders due to safety concerns but instead located the group at a scenic Sydney lookout near the city gardens, where they dispersed.
Fines Imposed for Content Creator
Later in the week, authorities stated they had issued the American online personality who goes by Sur Ronster, twenty-six, with two violation tickets for careless operation (with no death or previous bodily harm), with a fine of $562 and three demerit points each, in relation to the bridge incident. Officials noted that inquiries were continuing.
The personality is said to have over 3.4 million subscribers on one platform and over 1.2m on the social media app.
Creator's Response
The content creator gave comments to a major newspaper recently after the incident gained traction on digital platforms, stating he regretted giving "bike life" a negative image.
"I’ll probably take responsibility. That was one of the safest gatherings I have witnessed," he told the publication. "I’m coming here as a guest, so I’m going to abide by the rules and standards of Sydney. So when I decided to do a meet and greet it did not involve a ride-out, it was just to say hi under the bridge."
"I did not know the area well, it was my fault we found ourselves on the bridge and I had two choices: either the group rides the full length of the bridge and comes back, which is a crime. Or we reverse, essentially, before entering the bridge. And I made the decision at the time to turn around."
Broader Context on E-Bike Regulation
The spate of electric bicycles on roads nationwide has sparked growing calls for regulation. The federal health minister, Mark Butler, commented that non-compliant electric bikes were a "complete hazard on the road."
"Kids have done reckless acts on bikes ever since the early bicycle [but] the harm that are presenting at our ERs are absolutely devastating," the minister stated. "We’ve got to make sure we prevent these things coming into the country [and] officers are granted the powers to take strong action, to take them away, to crush them, to destroy them."
The state reported 226 injuries related to ebikes in the previous year. But, in the initial half of 2025, that figure jumped to 233 injuries plus four deaths.
