Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off after a rollercoaster final round of play.
The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie from just over eight feet to clinch the win, repeating his only previous tournament triumph at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a playoff win against the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
The champion entered the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.
Play-Off Climax
That set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner triumphed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more individual. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to put into words at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Notable Contenders
Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to do, finishing a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.
The Danish golfer fired six birdies of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
